Barrhead Travel will invest £2m towards its own package holiday program in order to address a gap that is left in the industry by failed ventures from companies like Globespan.
Barrhead Travel is the largest independent travel group in Scotland and is seeking to run flights throughout the summer to popular destinations such as Majorca and the Spanish mainland.
The program will kick off with a flight from Glasgow to Palma scheduled to take place this year. If the service is a success, Barrhead will expand its offerings to include six more popular destinations. Flights will be offered from both Glasgow and Aberdeen.
Last year the amount of people travelling to Spain from Britain fell by about 15% but Barrhead believes that Scots will once again return to the sunny beaches and resorts of Spain due to the fact that travel costs are starting to fall.
The new scheme is designed to help meet the demand for package holidays after Seguro and Globespan collapsed, both of which were low cost providers.
During the first phase of the new package program, Barrheads stated that it will charter flights from the British Airways CityFlyer fleet exclusively that will operate throughout the summer on a weekly basis.
The programme is scheduled to run from the end of May through the middle of September with flights offered to Majorca, Palma, and Barcelona.
Chief executive of Barrhead Travel, Sharon Munro, stated that as one of the largest travel brands recognized in the UK and on if its largest travel conglomerates, it is only logical that the company develop its package deals which is easy enough given their years of experience within the travel industry.
