Israeli hotel chain eye up Europe for expansion

Fattal is the largest hotel chain in Israel and its sights set on international expansion for especially into the European market. This is something that it has succeeded at greatly in the past and it has over 30 hotels throughout Europe. Currently there are hotels in Switzerland, Germany, Belgium and Hungary.

They usually come under the Leonardo brand and are either rated as four or three stars. The company of announced that their expansion plans are going to bring a hotel to Vienna this July and they are going to be opening two additional hotels in Germany.

The owner of the company, David Fattal commented, “We have 20 hotels in Israel and we know that it is a rather small country so we needed to expand internationally if we wanted to continue development. We already have a great deal of plans for expansion next year and are also going to be bringing hotels to Italy and Spain in the near future. We also have longer term plans for France and England.”

In Israel the hotel company dominate the market with 20 percent of all hotel bookings being with the company. In certain tourist hotspots such as the Dead Sea, the market share of the company is nearly 40 percent. The company have also stated that one of the reasons they are not expanding further in Israel is simply because the competition regulators in the country won’t allow them to.

The profit of the company is also increasing dramatically and over the last few years it has seen its profit figure grow by 10 percent every year. The company also announced that they might be looking at listing themselves on a stock market somewhere in Europe and have already ruled out a potential listing on the Israeli stock exchange.

Sandman Hotel Group open first British hotel in Newcastle

The Sandman Hotel Group is a Canadian company which has just opened its first hotel in the UK, the Sandman Signature Hotel which is located in Newcastle. This property has just won an award for being commercial property of the year in the north-east according to the Renaissance Awards. This award recognises excellence in the hotel across many sectors.

The hotel is located opposite the Newcastle United football ground and it is a multi-million pound investment that the judges of the competition said breathes new life into the surrounding area. The judges said that it marks a significant departure from the rather dull development which has not really changed over the last century.

An independent panel of property experts were responsible for selecting the hotel as the winner and the announcement was made in late April at an awards ceremony that was held at the Civic Centre in Newcastle. The panel commented about the hotel, “This is one of many developments in the north-east that has helped make the area more vibrant and exciting for both locals and visitors. This hotel is contemporary and incredibly stylish in the way it blends several historical elements with a modern touch is quite remarkable.”

There were six other finalist in the competition and it managed to beat them all off to win the prestigious prize. It beat off competition from other hotels as well as a business centre development called the Toffee Factory.

The Canadian company owns over 40 hotels throughout Canada and has recently been undergoing a worldwide expansion, which most recently has included this hotel in the UK. The hotel has been constructed and has over 170 bedrooms. It has been given a four star rating and also has several business facilities which are fully equipped for any meeting requirements.

The end is nigh for the British Midland airline

British Midland is an airline that has been flying over the UK for over five decades and it has just been announced last week that this airline is going to close. This is something that has been known about for a long time, but this is the first official announcement that has come from the airline industry.

The company is owned by British Airways and they said that it is going to be closed resulting in the loss of around 1200 jobs. The majority of these are going to be in Leicestershire where around 400 people are going to be made redundant.

This closure is something that has been expected for a long time, ever since Michael Bishop had his share of BMI purchased for over £200 million back in 2009. He signed a ten-year deal with Lufthansa which was something they did not want to sign but needed to do in order to acquire another airline.

The reason the airline was eventually purchased by British Airways was because they wanted the slots at Heathrow for their own purposes. The parent company of British Airways, the International Airlines Group, has been expected to close down British Midland for a long time in order to allow the slots to be reassigned to its other airlines.

Virgin Atlantic has said that it wants to appeal the takeover decision as it claims that this would give the International Airline Group too much control over Heathrow airport. All of this fighting for slots has led to a significant human cost with over 1000 people losing their jobs.

3000 extra planes expected to land in the UK during the Olympics

During the Olympic Games this summer it is estimated that around 3000 extra aircraft are going to be arriving in the country. This figure has been released by the Civil Aviation Authority for the UK. The operators of these additional aircraft are going to have to book slots at the airports in advance of the Olympics, but the aviation authority have just released a statement saying that not many airlines have done this.

It is estimated that 150 of these flights are going to be carrying heads of state. Usually these people have diplomatic privileges so they do not have to book a flight slot in advance but the aviation authority is stated that the Olympic Games is not a state occasion so they will not be afforded any privileges.

It has also been the case that general aviation, such as diplomatic flights, will no longer be arriving at Heathrow because it has been reserved exclusively for commercial airlines.

Overall it is expected that around 500,000 people are going to be flying to Britain over the summer and the airports have had many changes made to them in order to cope with this extra load. For example, it is no longer possible to park at Luton and it has been reserved exclusively as a drop and go airport.

All airlines are going to have to file their flight plans as they would normally, but they have to remember that airspace is going to be more limited than normal so if they file a flight plan that doesn’t have a landing slot it is going to be rejected.

Furthermore, aircraft that are flying to the UK to attend the Olympics are going to be subject to additional security and will only be allowed to fly to the UK if they have undergone security checks at certain airports.

Hilton Worldwide to hold recruitment drive across the UK

Hilton Worldwide launched a new recruitment drive this week in an attempt to fill about 700 vacancies that reach in scope from entry level positions on up to management positions. The hotel chain also plans to open 18 new hotels throughout the UK which will allow it to create 100 new jobs as part of a larger apprenticeship scheme.

This week Hilton Worldwide will hold a series of events at hotels spread out across the UK in order to engage people in the field of hospitality and introduce it as a career idea. Vice President for Europe for Hilton Worldwide HR department, Ben Bengougam, stated that their hotels reach across the entire nation and offer plenty of opportunities to those that are interested in becoming involved in the hospitality field.

Included in the career field noted by Bengougam are careers within the fields of engineering, cooking, architecture, and even room attendants. He continued to say that Hilton Worldwide is looking for individuals that have an excellent work ethic and are passionate about offering the best customer service that they can.

In exchange for these qualities, Hilton is willing to offer qualified candidates a fun place to work and a supportive environment to help them thrive. Hilton Worldwide also hopes to expand its apprenticeship scheme later in 2012 by beginning a new program that focuses on the art of hotel operations and hospitality exclusively.

The expansion will allow for 100 new apprentices to be taken on in addition to the Hilton Chef Apprenticeship Academy that already has trained sixty apprentices and is looking for another sixty apprentices. Premier Inns plan 20 new hotels in London in the next 2 years

Value hotel chain Premier Inn is has announced that it intends to expand its London hotel portfolio by opening a new hotel in Leicester Square. The chain believes that the new hotel will bring £12m more into the London economy due to increased trade and tourism.

It is slated to have 83 rooms, but it will be just one of twenty new Premier Inns that will open in London over the next two years. The expansion is part of the hotel chain’s overall goal of increasing its offerings up to 65,000 rooms over the course of five years.

The street address for the Central London hotel will be 1 Leicester Place ,at the heart of the area and neatly within walking distance of plenty of tourist attractions such as Covent Garden, popular theatres, and shops. The site is set to be open by the close of this May and offers 32 new job opportunities for those that live in London.

It is also an innovative endeavour as the rooms will feature double soundproofing to ensure that guests receive a quiet night’s rest, even though they are staying in the heart of the London action.Each bedroom will be built to comfortably fit two adults and two children under the age of 16 and will feature a king sized bed, Freeview television, Wi-Fi internet access, and tea/coffee machines.

UK public encouraged to take part in holiday health experiment

A partnership has been formed between Kuoni Travel, the leading global holiday company and Nuffield Health, the leading healthcare charity, with the aim of getting a better understanding of the health impacts taking a holiday has on the body.

People from right across Britain are to be encouraged to sign up and take part in their Holiday Health Experiment, which is seeking to quantify both the psychological and physiological changes that occur following a holiday. The recruitment drive will take place across April, May and June and they can enter by visiting www.kuoni.co.uk/holidayhealthexperiment.

Here, they will be asked to complete a short survey which looks at their health and their holiday habits. A selection of these applicants will be put on a shortlist and undergo a series of clinical tests and discussion sessions with a psychotherapist. These will take place before, during and after their Kuoni 2012 holiday.

The experiment will look at the effects ‘everyday life’ has on the body and mind and then compare the data with how different types of travel and holiday experiences influence mental and physical well-being.

This experiment is the first of its kind conducted by a UK travel company in conjunction with a medical team consisting of doctors, physiologists and further assistance from a leading psychotherapist. Six individuals selected will receive:

Advanced Resilience Testing – Each individual will wear a small ECG monitor for three days and nights before the holiday, during, and after the holiday. By assessing each individual’s heart rate variability, the relative activity of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems will be monitored to provide an insight into the impact of various stressors on the person’s body.

Psychological Sessions – A series of one to one counselling sessions before and after the holiday with leading psychotherapist, Christine Webber, to look at stress, anxiety, mood, libido and all aspects of mental health in everyday life and across a holiday period. Each individual will also be asked to keep a mood diary before, during and after the holiday.

In addition, each individual will be given a Nuffield Health 360+ Health Assessment. This will look at their overall health and fitness and includes analysis of: Body Mass Index, waist/hip ratio, cholesterol, glucose, full blood profile, resting heart rate, blood pressures, ECG tests, hydration, alcohol units, caffeinated drinks, hours of sleep, sleep quality, nutritional status and aerobic fitness. Each individual will have time with a doctor to discuss the results.

Each recruit will be re-tested after their holiday and the data will be compared with the ‘pre-holiday’ clinical data to identify any changes. The results of the experiment will be launched in autumn 2012.

A ‘control group’ of six further individuals, with similar ages and lifestyles to the six selected to go on the holiday, will also undergo the clinical tests and discussion sessions so that further comparisons can be made when looking at the immediate and longer term impact of a holiday.

Gatwick employees of BA set to lose jobs or be transferred

Many British Airways workers employed at Gatwick airport will either get transferred to a different company or lose their jobs, according to plans which were unveiled recently by the airline. 400 ramp workers and baggage handlers will have their jobs outsourced and 170 customer service representatives are to be laid off, under the new proposals to transform the work of British Airways at Gatwick.

The cuts will affect baggage handlers, customer service staff, coaching operations and the baggage arrivals service. British Airways hopes their proposal will be agreed on by trade unions and that ramp workers will have their roles paid for by external suppliers. It’s all part of a new plan to improve British Airways, turn them into a cost-competitive business and allow them to safeguard future jobs.

British Airways say that they want to do all they can to reduce the impact of changes to their customer service team, but they admit that it’s likely that there are going to be a number of cuts to the customer service area and the management team as well as throughout the support structure.

“British Airways, a traditional carrier with a long standing history of full-service, has to transform their cost base so that it’s possible to effectively compete in the current market. BA will continue to deliver the highest level of service possible and strive to remain good value for customers.”

The news of the airline’s cuts comes just after IAG, BA’s parent company, highlighted several problems that the industry faces and presented their annual results. Some of the worries that British Airways are facing include the rise in oil prices, Iberia’s recent industrial action and air passenger duty.

The head of BA, and several other major figures including EasyJet’s boss, are working towards trying to persuade George Osborne to get rid of air passenger duty. Airlines claim that increased passenger duty taxes are stifling economic recovery.
